The Municipality will officially launch its massive clean-up and maintenance campaign on Friday, 07 March 2014 to encourage cleanliness and maintenance of the City and entire Municipal area.
The ‘Clean my City’ Programme was initiated by the Mayor James Nxumalo last year in response to the social ills and service delivery problems identified in certain parts of the City. It involves clean-up operations, identification of maintenance challenges, bylaw enforcement as well as an education drive to change and influence people’s attitudes.
The programme will be officially launched on Friday by Nxumalo.
Nxumalo said this intervention also aims to address environmental challenges and ensure that, together, we build a sustainable City. He said this was a coordinated approach involving all Municipal departments as well as other stakeholders such as the community, business, Non-Governmental Organisations, police as well as national and provincial government departments.
“We all have a responsibility to create a sustainable City which can be enjoyed by future generations. We welcome input from all stakeholders and are committed to work with you to take our City forward,” said Nxumalo. Nxumalo said the campaign involves influencing people’s attitudes towards the cleanliness and maintenance of their public spaces and bylaw enforcement.
The formal launch will take place at the ICC where Mayor Nxumalo will unveil details of the programme at a stakeholders’ breakfast at 07h30. This will be followed by a massive clean-up operation of a piece of land near Mafumbuka High School in Umlazi, which has become an eyesore and a dumping ground. The place has also become a hiding place for criminals terrorising the local community.
Communities are urged to partake in the initiative by cleaning up their local public spaces, homes and workplaces between 10h00 and 11h00 on Friday, to demonstrate their commitment to a clean, well maintained and safe environment in areas they live in.
The Clean My City intervention is in line with the Municipality’s vision to be Africa’s most caring and liveable City by 2030.
