Zero Debt Points South Africans to Free Debt Calculators

15 October 2026 by My Durban

School fees, December getaways and festive shopping all arrive in the last quarter of the year, and Zero Debt wants South African households to check their finances now, before those costs pile up. The debt counselling company, which is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR), has four free online calculators on its website. It recommends them as a simple first step for anyone who thinks their debt may be getting out of hand.

Using the calculators costs nothing and requires no registration. They show people exactly where their income is going. Some users will find that a few changes to their budget will do. Others will see that it makes sense to talk to a debt counsellor about Debt Review.

What each calculator does

All four calculators sit on one tools page on the Zero Debt site, and each one answers a different question.

Budget Calculator. The user types in their monthly take-home pay, and the tool shows national averages for the main spending categories: giving, savings, food, utilities, housing, transport, insurance, household items, debt, retirement and entertainment. They then add their own amounts to compare income with spending. The tool recommends treating the averages as a guide. If a category does not apply, for example debt payments, that money can go towards personal goals instead.

Debt-to-Income Ratio Calculator. This ratio is what someone owes divided by what they earn, and lenders use it to decide how risky it would be to lend that person more. The user enters monthly payments for a home loan, vehicle finance, student loans, credit cards, personal loans and any other debt, plus their gross monthly income. The calculator then gives the ratio as a percentage.

Debt Snowball Calculator. This calculator lets users plan the order in which to pay off several debts, so that progress builds as each one is cleared.

Debt Calculator. A general tool that puts all of a person’s debt figures in one place so they can work through them.

Why October is the right time

For many families, October to January is one of the most expensive stretches of the year. Year-end functions, holiday travel, gifts and back-to-school costs in January all arrive on top of existing repayments on credit cards, store accounts and personal loans. Doing the sums now leaves time to plan, and that can decide whether January is stressful or manageable.

Zero Debt says that understanding the figures comes first. When a household knows its debt-to-income ratio and the gap between what it earns and what it spends, it is much easier to decide what to do next.

When the results call for debt help

If the calculators show that monthly repayments are more than the household can keep up with, Zero Debt offers a free assessment with no obligation. People can ask for one through the request callback form or by calling the toll-free number. A consultant looks at their information and checks whether they qualify for debt help services.

For people who qualify, debt review is a legal process under the National Credit Act. The debt counsellor negotiates lower interest rates with credit providers and combines all debts into one affordable monthly repayment, worked out from the person’s actual living expenses. Once a consumer is under debt review, credit providers and debt collectors can no longer contact them directly. All communication goes through the debt counsellor. Zero Debt’s specialist debt review attorneys then apply for a court order that makes the new repayment plan legally binding. As long as the consumer sticks to the plan, this protects them from legal action such as repossession or garnishee orders.

Debt consolidation is part of this approach. Zero Debt explains it as bringing debts owed to several credit providers together into one repayment at lower interest rates. The consumer then makes one reduced payment each month instead of paying several creditors. The company says it can help people who are over-indebted, blacklisted or have a bad credit record. At every stage, the consumer decides what they can realistically afford, so they keep enough money for essential living expenses each month.

How to choose a registered debt counsellor

Anyone comparing Debt Review Companies should first check that the company is registered with the National Credit Regulator. Only registered debt counsellors can place a consumer under debt review. It is also worth asking how the company will keep in touch during the process, who will negotiate with creditors and whether one consultant will be assigned to the case.

Chris Craven founded Zero Debt in 2009 because he wanted to help South Africans who were struggling with debt. The company is NCR registered and fully compliant with the National Credit Act. Every case gets an experienced debt consultant who guides the client from start to finish. All personal information is kept confidential, and the company deals only with the client’s credit providers. Its website reports an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 from more than 700 Google reviews and says it has helped thousands of clients take back control of their finances.

Guides to go with the calculators

Zero Debt also has a resources section with guides written in plain language. Topics include what the National Credit Act requires, the real reasons people choose debt review, what to expect from a second debt review and how to rebuild credit after debt review ends. Used together with the calculators, the guides help consumers understand their situation before they speak to anyone.

With the busiest spending season of the year coming up, a few minutes on a budget calculator could be the most useful thing a household does for its finances this month.
