On Sunday, 1 November 2013 the eThekwini Municipality, under the umbrella of Sukuma Sakhe, will be hosting World Aids Day at J.L. Dube Stadium in Inanda, from 08h00-15h00, to create awareness on HIV & AIDS issues.
The Municipality annually hosts this crucial event to create awareness on issues of HIV/AIDS and TB, and also educate communities about the importance of testing for HIV and knowing their HIV status. The Municipality is committed to ensure that future generations do not get affected by this epidemic hence it encourages people to know their HIV status and for those who are HIV positive to live a healthy lifestyle and take their treatment as required.
People who do not know their HIV status are more likely to spread the virus as compared to those who do. According to statistics, KwaZulu-Natal has a rapidly increasing number of HIV infections every year as close to 40 000 people get infected yearly. The Municipality has embarked on numerous HIV campaigns to combat this disease including encouraging pregnant women to do early testing and start ARV treatment where necessary. Anti-retroviral treatments are now available at every Municipal clinic in KwaZulu-Natal.
As part of the fight against HIV & AIDS, the Municipality recommends that people protect themselves from HIV by abstaining from sex, having one partner, using protection when engaging in sex, get tested and most importantly to love and care for people who are living with HIV and not discriminate against them.
