Two alleged hijackers arrested

20 November 2014 by Alan

KwaMsane Tactical Response Team and Empangeni Flying Squad arrested two men for car hijacking, seized an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen cell phones at Hluhluwe. On 18 November 2014 at about 06:45, a 40-year-old male was driving his Toyota Hilux bakkie at Ntambanana area and picked up two hitch-hikers. It is alleged that the hitch-hikers pointed the driver with a .38 revolver, took his cell phones, pushed him to the passenger’s seat and drove off with his vehicle. While they were driving on the N2 freeway, they forced him out of the vehicle. He managed to flag-down a passing police vehicle. Flying Squad and TRT members followed up on the vehicle on the N2 towards north. The vehicle fitting the description was spotted in Hluhluwe on the way to Jozini and the suspects were instructed to stop.

Police seized a .38 revolver with two live rounds of ammunition suspected to have been used during the hijacking and six cell phones suspected to have been stolen. They were arrested and taken to Hluhluwe police station for detention. They will be charged for car hijacking, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of unlicensed firearm as well as ammunition. They will appear at Hluhluwe Magistrates’ Court soon. The seized firearm will be sent to ballistics to ascertain if it has been used in the commission of any other crime in the country.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant Mmamonnye Ngobeni highly praised Flying Squad and TRT members for swiftly responding to the complaint which led to the recovery of the vehicle and seizure of an unlicensed firearm. “We will arrest all criminals who endanger the lives of people in our province,” she said.
