The Executive Committee (EXCO) has taken an in principle decision to extend the Top Gear Festival for a further three years following its successful run in the City. The Festival held its final show over the weekend as part of the three year deal that involved a partnership between the Municipality and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government.
EXCO held its meeting at City Hall on Tuesday, 24 June 2014. Briefing EXCO, Mayor James Nxumalo said he held discussions with the Top Gear team and KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu about the future of the Festival in Durban.
“The Top Gear Team indicated that they would be very happy to return to Durban because they enjoyed their stay for the past three years. They informed us that there are about 10 other cities that are interested in hosting Top Gear but they are willing to give Durban the first preference,” he said.
“EXCO should take an in principle decision to host the event for another three years because we have seen a huge return on our investment. The event has put Durban on the world map and we have reaped economic benefits of about R140 million, compared to the R12m investment.”
The in principle resolution was supported by all political parties represented at EXCO. City Manager Sibusiso Sithole and City Treasury were mandated to investigate the full financial implications of extending the event. A report detailing the benefits and return on investments of the past three years will be compiled and presented to EXCO.
Mayor Nxumalo added that the Provincial Cabinet will also discuss the matter today and was expected to also take an in principle support for the event.
