City to strengthen VIP protection unit

25 June 2014 by Alan

Mayor Nxumalo has urged City Manager Sithole to fast track the process of beefing up the Municipality’s VIP Protection Unit in order to minimise spending on the hiring of private security guards. The Municipality is providing security to councillors who are facing security threats, mostly utilising private security establishments.

Mayor Nxumalo said an in principle decision has already been taken by Council to establish a fully-fledged unit and there was a need to speed up the process.

“We need to speed up the process so that we can have our own fully fledged VIP Protection Unit. We can save a lot of money if we provide this service internally and can create a lot of job opportunities.

“We already have VIP Protection in-house but they are only assigned to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the Speaker, so if we expand the Unit we will be able to deploy guards to other councillors who need protection,” said Mayor Nxumalo.
