Tamper With Water Infrastructure at Your Peril

27 May 2026 by My Durban

The eThekwini Municipality strongly warns residents against tampering with Pressure Reducing Valves (PRVs) and other critical water infrastructure, as these illegal actions continue to cause widespread water supply interruptions in several communities.

KwaMashu M is currently without water due to recent tampering with PRVs.

The Municipality has noted with serious concern that these incidents are becoming increasingly frequent, despite repeated efforts to secure PRV chambers with locks and protective measures. Municipal infrastructure is, however, continuously being vandalised.

Similar incidents have also been reported in Ntuzuma and eNanda, where vandalism and interference with water infrastructure continue to disrupt water supply to residents.

Pressure Reducing Valves are essential components of the water distribution system and are designed to regulate water pressure and maintain stable supply.

Any unauthorised interference with these systems compromises the network and leaves communities without water for extended periods.

The Municipality strongly condemns all acts of theft, vandalism, and tampering with public infrastructure. These criminal acts not only damage municipal property, but they disrupt essential services, and place additional financial strain on the Municipality.

The City warns that anyone found tampering with municipal infrastructure may face criminal prosecution.

Residents are urged to work with the Municipality to protect public infrastructure and report suspicious activity involving water infrastructure.

Suspicious activities can be reported anonymously to the City Integrity and Investigations Directorate on the toll-free number: 0800 20 20 20.
