The photographic exhibition titled “South Africa in the Making”, which is supported by an audio tour system and focuses on the struggle for non-racism and equality in South Africa from 1910-1994, is to be housed at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The recommendation to move the exhibition to the Moses Mabhida Stadium for the next five years was supported by EXCO. The exhibition is currently housed at HTI Building, Corner of Cross Street and Carlisle Street, but the building has been sold by its owners prompting an urgent need for the exhibition to be relocated.
The exhibition will be curated under the custodian of the Community and Emergency Services Cluster and the monthly rental will be R15 000 per month with an annual increase of eight percent.
The exhibition was launched in 2010 at the Durban Art Gallery by the Monty Naicker Commemoration Committee, a registered non-profit organisation, under whose auspices it is produced.
It is open to the general public and to schools and has already been attended by thousands of visitors.
According to excerpts in the audio tour sound track scripted and narrated by Mac Mahaj: “Our challenge in the Making of South Africa is to take experiences of our diverse communities and make them a shared one…Until the voices of the oppressed are heard there can be no truly South African story.”
Mayor Nxumalo said the exhibition would add value to the Stadium complex by providing an additional draw card for thousands of potential visitors.
He said the stadium already boasts the cable car and the bungee swing amongst some of its tourist attractions.
