The IFP Spokesperson on Transport, Mr Petros Sithole as called on traffic law enforcement in all provinces to show no mercy to reckless and negligent drivers during this festive period. The high number of road deaths and injuries sustained during this period are largely preventable and in this regard we urge all road users to be vigilant and to always obey the rules of the road.
Sithole said “Traffic officials must also deal harshly with drivers who use mobile devices whilst driving as many accidents are caused by drivers who are preoccupied on their phones when they should be paying attention to the road. Traffic authorities in all provinces must also ensure that traffic officers are highly visible both day and night as this greatly assists in the prevention of reckless and dangerous driving by motorists.”
If we fail to act harshly against reckless and negligent drivers, our roads will increasingly become death-traps and will soon be declared the second highest killer after HIV/Aids in South Africa.
Sithole further said that “The IFP specifically calls upon the Mpumalanga traffic authorities to be more active and more visible on the infamous Moloto Road stretching from Pretoria via former KwaNdebele homeland to Limpopo, where many fatalities have recently occurred.”
Community members must remain vigilant and report reckless drivers or those who drive under the influence of alcohol, who have un-roadworthy or overloaded vehicles or who commit any violation of traffic laws to the traffic authorities.
