The on-going service delivery intervention programme by eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba is yielding positive results as reported water leaks in the city decrease from 13 000 to 3 900.
Yesterday, 7 October, Mayor Xaba was on the ground leading a high-level inspection of water and sanitation infrastructure in uMlazi Wards 80, 81 and 88.
He also monitored repairs to water leaks as well as the clearing and flushing of severe sewer network blockages, contributing to a further decrease.
The city-wide intervention is part of the Municipality’s accelerated programme to restore critical public infrastructure by deploying technical response teams to areas affected by persistent water leaks and sewer spillages.
“Since we started this programme about two months ago we have seen a significant reduction in water leaks. Our goal here is not just to apply temporary fixes, but to ensure our maintenance crews clear backlog systemically, restore the dignity of our residents, and protect our environment from toxic spillages,” said Mayor Xaba.
He also warned that public infrastructure misuse remains a primary driver of recurring sewer system blockages across the municipality.
Mayor Xaba urged community members to safeguard their infrastructure by stopping the disposal of foreign objects in sewer manholes.
Furthermore, he encouraged residents to report illegal water connections, which overload existing water and sanitation infrastructure.
