SAPS members must be compelled to disclose financial interests

2 September 2013 by Alan

The IFP has made calls on the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa and the National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega to make it mandatory for all SAPS members to disclose their financial interests.

IFP Spokesperson on Police, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu said; “SAPS members, like Members of Parliament, should be compelled to disclose their financial interests. This will not only assist in fighting corruption involving police officers but will also minimize conflicts of interest. The media reports that an estimated 27 000 SAPS members are allegedly active directors of private companies; these interests should be fully disclosed,”

“The SAPS continues to suffer a great deal of damage to its reputation through the actions of corrupt officials. A foundation of ‘correct’ policing and an ethos of discipline, integrity and accountability must be inculcated into the force if its image and credibility are ever to be restored,” said Ndlovu.

The IFP calls on the National Police Commissioner to work closely with the Justice Department and Public Service Commission in ensuring that all corrupt police officers are named, shamed and prosecuted. The IFP trusts that the conviction and sentencing of these police officers will further spur the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) onwards in continuing with its work to root out rampant corruption wherever it manifests itself in the SAPS.
