Alleged illegal Cato Crest evictions

1 September 2013 by Alan

The Abahlali baseCato Crest organisation spokesperson, Ndabo Mzimela, said today:

“The eThekwini Municipality is currently evicting people in Cato Crest in violation of the law and a Court Order

On 23 August 2013 we secured an interim interdict against the eThekwnini Municipality from continuing with their illegal evictions in Cato Crest.

However the Municipality has returned to Cato Crest today and is currently demolishing our homes and leaving us homeless. These evictions are illegal, in violation of a court order and a violent attack on our humanity and our right to live in this city.

The Mayor, James Nxumalo, is leading an ANC delegation that is on the scene along with Clr Mzimunye Ngiba. They are accompanied by heavy security. When we ask to talk they refuse to meet us. When we resist they tell us to go back to the Eastern Cape, threaten us with death, kill us and attack us like they are coming to fight a war.

We will continue to resist this criminal municipality and will defend our homes and our right to live in this city.”
