The IFP has made calls on the MEC for Health in KwaZulu-Natal to urgently investigate claims of corpses being sold at Hlabisa District Hospital to funeral parlours.
IFP spokesperson on health, Mrs Hilda Msweli MP, said “Allegations that bodies are being sold for a ‘commission’ to local funeral parlours servicing the government hospital must be investigated. It’s alleged that hospital officials are pocketing thousands of Rands each week in exchange for these bodies.
“Funeral parlours also claim that if they don’t pay the commission to the hospital officials they are not given any corpses. These funeral parlours are dependent on the hospital for sustainability. They would be forced to pay these officials in order to function” concluded Msweli.
The IFP calls on the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Health MEC to urgently institute an investigation into this matter and anyone involved must be dismissed and face charges.
The Minister of Health must also launch an extended investigation into all public hospitals in order to ensure that any sale of corpses is halted.
