Government must prevent possible closure of St Mary’s Hospital

6 November 2013 by Alan

The IFP has urged the KwaZulu Natal department of Health to help prevent the possible closure of the crucial St Mary’s Hospital between Durban and Pietermaritzburg by providing it with necessary funding and other logistical assistance. IFP Spokesperson on Health, Ms Hilda Msweli MP said, “Durban and its surrounding areas’ residents cannot afford to lose St Mary’s Hospital as it is the only district hospital that caters to them. This hospital also plays a pivotal role in providing patients with HIV treatment. Its closure could result in many HIV positive patients missing treatments and possibly dying as a result thereof.”

The IFP pleads to Government and any private funders to come to the rescue of St Mary’s hospital as a matter of the utmost urgency.

Msweli added, “This hospital holds a special place in the hearts and minds of many Durbanites as it has served them well for over a century. We cannot keep on closing important facilities such as hospitals in our country. We have seen this about to happen to McCord Hospital. Government should be doing everything in its power to keep these facilities operational.”
