EThekwini Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services responded swiftly in the early hours of this morning to a fast-moving fire that tore through the Quarry West Informal Settlement in Ward 25.
The fire broke out at approximately 5:20am near the M19 in Reservoir Hills and spread rapidly through informal structures.
Upon arrival, firefighting teams were met with intense flames and thick smoke, with several structures already consumed by the blaze.
Through a coordinated and efficient response, fire crews managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
More than 35 informal structures were destroyed, leaving approximately 60 residents displaced.
No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.
However, one female resident suffered a hypertension-related medical episode as a result of the trauma and was treated on-site by Emergency Medical Services.
While the cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical fault, investigations are underway to determine its exact origin.
The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate working alongside humanitarian partners, has mobilised rapidly to provide immediate relief to affected residents.
Assistance includes food parcels, blankets, and other essential supplies as efforts continue to stabilise the situation.
Displaced families have temporarily found shelter with neighbours, friends, and relatives while the Municipality explores further interventions to support those affected.
Further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
