The eThekwini Metro Police have stepped up operations in the Fields Hill area, in the aftermath of the tragic accident involving horse and trailer truck where 23 lives were lost. The Head of Metro Police, Commissioner Nzama had ordered that trucks found to be unroadworthy by Officers, be impounded pending the remedying of identified faults.
This has resulted in 18 trucks being impounded for various defects and suspected irregular authorisation permits. Whereas this approach is likely to create inconvenience in the freight transport industry, Metro Police requests the understanding and cooperation from all stakeholders.
Over and above these measures, officers have been instructed to work with the City’s Informal Trade Department in ensuring that informal traders operating in the proximity of traffic intersections adhere to the safety standards contained in the provisions of the National Road Traffic Act.
This operation is in response to the proliferation of informal traders particularly at busy intersections where their presence creates an unsafe environment and traffic hazard. Metro Police shall always strive to create safe environment for all.
