The eThekwini Municipality in partnership with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) held a registration awareness walk to encourage residents of the City to register and vote in the upcoming National and Provincial elections. Emphasis is also on targeting youth who were born after the new dispensation and are potential first time voters. The walk commenced from King Dinizulu Park and concluded at City Hall with a partisan crowd constituting of supporters of various political parties.
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala, stressed the importance of registering and participating in the upcoming elections. She said, “There is no better way for a citizen of South Africa to demonstrate their democratic right than by casting your vote, how else can you enjoy the democracy that many heroes of this beautiful land fought and died for in order to ensure freedom for all.”
The Manager of Electoral Operations for the IEC (KZN), Ms Ntombifuthi Masinga, commended the growing number of voters in the Province. She said, “By the look of this turnout by residents of eThekwini only a positive voter turnout can be expected from the Province, and the tolerance demonstrated by the various political parties is highly commendable.”
This walk was also a lead up to voter registration weekend that is to be held on the weekend of 09-10 November 2013.
