Durban to Host 15th SAASTEC Conference

2 November 2013 by Alan

The eThekwini Municipality will host the 15th Annual Conference of the Southern African Association of Science and Technology Centres (SAASTEC), taking place from 4 to 9 November 2013 at the Royal Hotel.

The conference aims to stimulate the development of science and technology centres, present models that enhance education and change in Southern Africa and to focus on the impact of science and technology centres in the regions that they serve.

It is a build up to the 2014 Science Centre World Summit and it will be officially opened by the Minister of the Department of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom.

The conference brings together expects and professionals in science and technology, researchers and curriculum developers.

Director of the Natural Science Museum, Allison Ruiters, said the Municipality is delighted to host the conference and it will provide the Municipality with an opportunity to showcase Durban Natural Science Museum’s sites such as the City Hall Galleries and the Research Centre to both local and international delegates.

“This will ensure that we expose the world to the research undertaken in our museums, the application of this research and our methods of disseminating this new knowledge to our public. The conference will assist us in developing quality learning experience for all our visitors and by so doing we will be igniting in them the appreciation for biodiversity and science,” said Ruiters

Details of the conference are as follows:

  • Conference Launch and Registration: 04 November 2013 at Kwa Muhle Museum: 5pm
  • Conference proceedings: 05 to 07 November 2013 at the Royal Hotel: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
  • Gala Dinner and Official Opening 06 November 2013: Moses Mabhida Stadium: 6 pm
  • City Tour on Rickshaw Bus: 7 November 2013
