Durban, South Africa – HOMii Lifestyle (Pty) LTD is converting one of Durban city’s most treasured architectural gems, the old Garlicks building, into a unique place for its guests to co-live, co-work and co-play.

Constructed in 1927, the building became one of the most iconic historical landmarks in the city and home to Stuttafords Durban before it was sold to Garlicks for an estimated R15m in 1983. Back in the 70s and 80s, the city’s most-prized structure was known to be a family-outing favourite. Here, relationships were formed, and memories were made.

HOMii Managing Executive, Darren de Leur says, “Whilst the functional purpose of the building may be different now, the sentiment remains. Our co-work, co-live, co-play model is based on building spaces that allows guests to be a part of something; this environment gives them the opportunity to build strong relationships and memories with like-minded individuals whilst creating a community that they are proud to be a part of.”

The new HOMii building, which was officially launched on 7 December 2019, is the fifth of its kind in a string of restoration projects that have taken place around the country. Eight stories tall, the building boasts 145 apartments made up of fully-furnished, private or co-living apartments, daily suites (holiday rentals) as well as loft apartments.

Among its unique elements is a roof-top viewing deck on the 8th floor, a 7th floor chill area with a balcony and a pergola, an atrium, an exclusive chairman’s lounge PLUS free co-working spaces. This of course is in addition to free wi-fi, fully-serviced apartments and a laundry room.

de Leur warns to not be fooled by the restored building’s old-world charm, “The inside is not only modern, it is driven by technology. Security access control with facial recognition, 24-hour security and CCTV surveillance make safe and secure living in the city possible.”

With co-living prices as low as R2950 a month based on a ‘no-lease, pre-paid stay’, the new HOMii building is not only the trendiest, but the most affordable lifestyle building in Durban.
