Hollywoodbets Dolphins announce exciting squad for 2020/21 season – Featured Durban Blog

Hollywoodbets Dolphins announce exciting squad for 2020/21 season:

Durban – Following a strong conclusion to the 2019/2020 season, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins have announced a number of exciting changes to their squad as they welcome in three new players and reward three players from within the strong KZN pipeline.

Coming into the Dolphins set-up from outside the province are two VKB Knights stars, Keegan Petersen and Ottneil Baartman, while young Northerns trailblazer, Ruan de Swardt, also joins the KZN set-up.

“Keegan has been a very consistent run scorer across all competitions, to have a player of his calibre coming in to strengthen the top order is a massive boost and adds to the depth we have in our squad.” Strydom said.

Petersen was rewarded with a call-up to the Standard Bank Proteas squad for their recent test series with England and this is a good indicator that his career is heading on the right trajectory.

Baartman has made the step up from semi-professional cricket to franchise level well and stood out for the Knights in their recent Momentum One Day Cup campaign as he finished as the side’s third highest wicket taker in the competition.

“Ottneil has shown over the last season that he has what it takes at franchise level and we wanted to give him a chance to play regular cricket at that level. He bowled well for the Knights in the recent One Day Cup and will add good balance to our bowling line-up.”

22 year-old De Swardt has hugely impressive numbers at semi-professional level especially with a batting average of 55 in First Class cricket and 88 in List-A cricket.

“Ruan is a hugely talented young all-rounder and to be able to have him amongst our team is a massive bonus.”

The KZN Cricket Union’s highly successful development program continues to produce future stars, and will this year see Lifa Ntanzi and Andile Mogakane graduate to the Dolphins franchise team.

The experienced Mangaliso Mosehle has also been upgraded to a franchise contract following his positive season at Hollywoodbets KZN Inland.

“Mangi played an important role for us behind the stumps in the 4-Day Series and has so much to offer so we are delighted to have him in the Dolphins set-up.

“Lifa has raw pace and Andile has all-rounder potential, we are really excited about the talented players that the KZN pipeline keeps producing.” Strydom added.

Unfortunately there is a handful of players that will be leaving the Dolphins including Sibz Makhanya, Okuhle Cele, Calvin Savage and Lwandiswa Zuma.

“We want to thank these players for the impact that they have made at the Dolphins and with KZN Cricket during their time here,” CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom said. “We wish them all the best on their new adventures.”

As part of future planning, stalwart Vaughn van Jaarsveld, has joined the Hollywoodbets KZN Coastal setup and will play an integral part as mentor to some of the exciting young batsmen coming through the KZN pipeline. Left-arm spinner, Smangaliso Nhlebela, has also been retained at semi-professional level and will continue to develop his skills for the different formats.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins coach Imraan Khan is looking forward to hitting the ground running with the squad as soon as they can.

“It’s an exciting group of players to work with,” he said. “There is a lot of potential and the three boys that are coming in are quality players and I am sure they will add another dimension to the group.

“Andile (Mogakane) and Lifa (Ntanzi) are home grown and we are looking to grow their game’s over the coming months.”

Devnarain takes up SA U19 and Academy coaching role:

Durban – Current coach of the Hollywoodbets KZN Coastal Women’s team Dinesha Devnarain has been appointed as the first full-time Women’s Under-19s and Cricket South Africa (CSA) Women’s National Academy head coach.

The former Momentum Proteas star has spent her entire career with KZN Cricket and has been at the helm as a player and a coach for the better part of two decades and despite feeling excited by the opportunity she said she was emotional about leaving the province that she has dedicated so much of her life to.

“I had to tell the girls myself and not let them find out via social media so I broke the news to them on April Fool’s Day and they thought that I was joking!” Devnarain said. “It was not an easy decision for me as KZN Cricket is more like a family to me than a job but I knew that I had to move on for my career.

“This is a massive stepping stone for me in my career and I am looking forward to hitting the ground running in June with the national academy.”

Having become such an important part of the set-up at KZN Cricket over the past two decades, Devnarain knew that it was time to move on despite the emotional attachment to the union.

“I don’t think that there was anything else for me to do here – I had done all I could for these girls,” she added candidly.

“I would like to think that I have left women’s cricket in KZN in a better place than when I started here and I hope that whoever takes over will continue to grow the legacy and ethos of women’s cricket here.”

With the current lockdown in place as a result of the coronavirus outbreak in South Africa, Devnarain has got some time to prepare for her first assignment which will be with the national academy in June.

“We were supposed to be playing an Under-19 tri-series with England and Australia and that would have been a really tough start, given that our national week in December was rained out so we didn’t have much to go on!

“With the COVID-19 outbreak that was cancelled and I can focus all my immediate attention on the national academy intake in a few months’ time.

“I want to do things differently and I feel that knowledge of the game is not where it should be.

“We want the girls to be as professional as possible when they go back to their provinces and be ambassadors of the game in their provinces when they leave the academy,” she mentioned.

According to the KZN Cricket Union CEO, Heinrich Strydom, one of the main goals of the KZN Cricket system is to produce world class players, coaches and administrators.

“Dinesha’s role in improving women’s cricket in KZN has been unparalleled and we are sad to see her go,” he said. “However to see her moving into a national coaching role is hugely satisfying and we wish her all the best in her dual role with Cricket South Africa.

“She has all the attributes needed to become one of South Africa and the world’s best female coaches, and we will be following her journey with much anticipation.”

“I know that the KZN players are devastated to see her go which is a testament to the fantastic work that she did with the provincial women’s team.”
