The second round of the Fidelity Moor Cup got off to a cracking start on Friday night, as Varsity College hosted Bidvest Crusaders in a massive Durban North derby. It was an epic encounter with Varsity College getting out of the blocks quickest and racing to a 12-0 lead and as much as Crusaders literally through the kitchen sink against their neighbour’s, Varsity College never gave in. Varsity College blindside flank, Chris de Beer, was named man of the match and said: “we spend many hours practicing our defense and today it paid off. I’m glad to be on the victorious side tonight.”

A depleted Ethekweni Refractories Amanzimtoti squeaked home by 27 points to 25 against Richards Bay. The Toti Terrors had 9 of their first team players attending their star player Conrad Mostert’s wedding and had to call on all their reserves to hold off a passionate Richards Bay outfit. Coach Kevin Van Rensburg said, “We got out of jail today. It was panic stations as we underestimated Richards Bay and it almost came back to hurt us. We were glad to have Michael Uppink steer the troop’s home and he is definitely coming into his own on the blind side.”

Log leaders SA Home Loans Durban Collegians continued their dominance as they annihilated Newcastle 101-0. Delighted coach Jacques Deen said, “We are happy with the result. We’ve worked hard during the preseason and it is paying off. We are targeting one game at a time.”
This weekend the Newcastle Highlanders take on the Bidvest Crusaders at Growthpoint KINGS PARK as the curtain raiser to the Cell C Sharks versus Jaguares match. Coach Andre Swanepoel will look to marshall his troops and will want them to display a stronger and much improved showing at the tank.

The shock result of the weekend saw the South Coast Warriors down the UKZN Impi’s by 37- 19, in front of their intimidating home crowd of over three thousand people at Douglas Mitchell Stadium. The Warriors had their talismanic leader Juan van den Berg back on the park and this was the tonic they required to inspire them.
UKZN have had a disastrous week, UKZN Impi’s lost in the semifinals of the Varsity Shield. The UKZN Durban team has withdrawn from the first division and has now lost to the Warriors. Hopefully newly appointed Director of Rugby, Donald Ngwenya, can find some solutions ad transform the fortunes of this team.
(South Coast Warriors 37, UKZN Impi’s 19)
Current Moor Cup champions, Your Communication College Rovers were too strong for Mancosa Zululand Rhinos.
Assistant Coach Jeff Harper said, “I don’t think Rhinos Coach Charles Mandeni’s prediction of them finishing out of the drop zone is too far-fetched, they are definitely an improved side from last year. On Friday sees a massive encounter on KP3 at 20:00 when Rovers host Toit. We are expecting a highly physical encounter.”
