EThekwini Municipality’s swift intervention to assist fire victims in Quarry West Informal Settlement was evident during a visit yesterday by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Zandile Myeni, following a devastating blaze that tore through the community recently.
Hundreds of families have been left homeless after their homes were reduced to ashes, leaving them in urgent need of support and relief.
The fire destroyed approximately 120 informal structures, displacing 246 families and leaving many with nothing.
While no injuries or fatalities were reported, the emotional toll is immense as families begin the difficult journey of rebuilding their lives.
In response, the Municipality acted decisively, activating its emergency response systems.
Disaster Management teams were immediately deployed on-site, delivering critical humanitarian assistance including alternative shelter, food, and essential relief support to affected residents.
During her visit, Deputy Mayor Myeni engaged directly with families, offering comfort and reaffirming the City’s commitment to stand firmly with the affected community.
The visit formed part of ongoing intervention efforts to restore dignity and provide immediate relief to the victims.
Deputy Mayor Myeni said today’s visit was to show compassion and to restore hope to the affected families.
“As a caring City, we have brought in our partners and other government departments to ensure that you receive the necessary support and that you are taken care of,” she said
Deputy Mayor urged residents, to remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent fires before they occur, especially now that it is winter season.
Displaced families are currently being accommodated in temporary alternative shelters, where the Municipality continues to provide care and support, while the Human Settlements Department accelerates plans towards a sustainable, long-term housing solution.
The City’s intervention has been strengthened through a coordinated effort involving local, provincial and national government departments, alongside NGOs, ensuring that affected residents receive essential services, including healthcare, education, Home Affairs and human settlements support.
The eThekwini Municipality remains resolute, not only in providing urgent support, but in empowering communities with the knowledge and tools to prevent future fire disasters.
