Durban – The aQuellé Tour Durban is a tough enough challenge for road cyclists to complete but for Cape rider David Kleynhans this year’s race will be part of an epic 3300km journey to raise funds and awareness for the plight of the elderly.
42 year old Kleynhans, who is an avid road cyclist, will ride from his home in Welgemoed in Cape Town to Durban, covering the 1600 km trip in seven days, arriving in Durban in time to start the 105km aQuellé Tour Durban road race on Monday 28 April, after which he will set off on his return journey to his home in the Cape.

While he is very fit, the trip is more about raising money and drawing attention to the difficulties facing the elderly through his FRAIL charity.
“This will be my first aQuellé Tour Durban,” said Kleynhans, who has worked all over the world in the hospitality industry.
“After I started to cycle I saw the need to support others. Over the last 10 years I have done one or two tours a year, sometimes three tours in a year,” said Kleynhans.
Kleynhans grew up in the Addo area of the Eastern Cape before moving to Cape Town as a teenager, and spent time in the care of the elderly, and was moved by their plight.
“Through family I was shown the heartache that some seniors have to live with,” says Kleynhans. “I was shown love, and now I wish to share it with our seniors who cared for me when I was toddler.”
“I am able-bodied and able to care for myself, but who cares for those less fortunate to have any family members?” he added.
Kleynhans’ FRAIL (Friendship,Relatives,Acceptance,Involvement,Love) programme will benefit from his fundraising programme that will be driven by sponsorships and the sale of raffle tickets.
“I am asking people to sponsor me 4 cents per kilometer – that’s R65 one way,” said Kleynhans. “Every R65 sponsorship will get an entry into the raffle.”
He will also be interacting with community and local government leaders on each stage of his trip to seek support.
The aQuellé Tour Durban has always had a very strong charity drive, and through Club Cappuccino the race supports the Domino Foundation that serves the Amaoti community. Numerous individual riders use the race to either raise funds for charities of their own, or simply ride to raise awareness of these organisations ands causes.

- Day 1: 20th April 2014 Depart from Cape Town as far as Laingsburg. 275km
- Day 2: 21st April 2014 Continue from Laingsburg as far as Beaufort West. 200km
- Day 3: 22nd April 2014 Continue from Beaufort West as far as Graaff-Reinet. 204km
- Day 4: 23rd April 2014 Continue from Graaff- Reinet as far as Queenstown. 280km
- Day 5: 24th April 2014 Continue from Queenstown as far as Qumbu. 280km
- Day 6: 25th April 2014 Continue from Qumbu as far as Port Shepstone. 250km
- Day 7: 26th April 2014 Continue from Port Shepstone into Durban. 120km
- 28th April 2014: Compete in the aQuelle Tour Durban. 105km
- 29th April 2014: Depart Durban on return.
- 05th May 2014: Arrive in Cape Town.
The aQuellé Tour Durban road races takes place on Monday 28 April 2014.
