Bringing Opportunities Closer To Rural Communities

A new chapter of opportunity has begun for the rural communities of KwaXimba and Molweni.

The launch of two Human Capital Centres of Excellence today, 12 June, signals a bold step towards tackling unemployment, bridging the digital gap, and empowering young people with the skills and resources needed to participate meaningfully in the economy.

By placing essential resources closer to residents, the centres are creating pathways to learning, economic participation, and a better future for youth and communities.

For learners and young people, the centres stand as gateways to possibility, ensuring that opportunities are no longer determined by location.

Speaking on behalf of eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba, Councillor Ntando Khuzwayo acknowledged the realities facing rural youth, noting that access to opportunities has been limited.

“Distance and limited access to resources have stood between our rural youth and their aspirations. Today, we are changing that reality. These Centres of Excellence bring opportunity directly to our communities, equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and digital tools they need to unlock their potential, access economic opportunities, and shape a better future for themselves and generations to come,” said Councillor Khuzwayo.

He said the opening of the centres demonstrates the City’s commitment to ensuring that no community is left behind in the journey towards inclusive growth and development.

“By investing in our people and bringing services closer to where they are needed most, we are creating pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning. These centres will serve as hubs of innovation, empowerment, and transformation for our rural communities,” he said.

Ward 9 Councillor Siyabonga Nala welcomed the initiative.

“Today marks a turning point. These centres bring services closer to our people, giving our youth access to the tools, skills, and opportunities they need to build a better future. This initiative will transform not only the lives of young people but entire communities.”

Part of a growing network of 31 Centres of Excellence across eThekwini, the facilities serve as engines of transformation, offering digital literacy programmes, skills training, entrepreneurship support, and pathways into the world of work.

Equipped with modern computer laboratories, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and access to digital platforms, the centres provide a critical bridge between rural youth and economic opportunities.

A learner from Nqgungqulu High School in Molweni, Thabanakele Shabalala, said: “We are grateful to the Municipality for bringing lasting transformation to our rural communities, especially for young people. Today, we finally have a place to learn, access information, and build a better future right here in our own communities.”
