The Durban 2022 Commonwealth Games will repeat the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in terms of nation building, social cohesion and the promotion of the country’s image abroad, says Communications Minister Faith Muthambi.
The Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CDF) general assembly on Wednesday confirmed Durban as the host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“As government, we view this as another golden opportunity to prove to the world that it is safe for foreign nationals to visit and invest in our country. The games are a relevant platform to deepen nation-building and social cohesion as well as the branding of our country to the global audience.
“We are also equally excited that the opening ceremony is scheduled for July 18, which is the birthday of our late President Nelson Mandela – it does not get better than this where South Africans and the world will come together in celebration of Mandela’s vision of sports as a unifying force in society,” she said.
Minister Muthambi said South African television viewers will enjoy crystal clear pictures as the country would have already migrated from its old fashioned analogue broadcasting signal to digital broadcasting system.
“We want to assure South Africans that we will deliver their much-awaited Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) project and we hope to deliver the digital television ahead of the games so that they can also enjoy the superior television format that delivers better pictures and sound,” she said.
A digital standard is superior to analogue because of its greater accuracy, versatility, efficiency, and interoperability with other electronic media.
Digital signals also have the advantage of generating no noise and being more resistant to signal interference. Within the range of the signal, this results in a perfect signal.-SAnews.gov.za
