On Friday, 16 June 2017, Democratic Alliance Leader, Mmusi Maimane, will commemorate Youth Day by leading a march of thousands of young South Africans to the Phoenix Police Station, in eThekwini, demanding that stronger action be taken by government and the Police Service to end drug abuse amongst our youth, which continues to rob young people of their future.
The DA has long called for the reintroduction of specialised units to target specific crimes, and that specialised gang and drug units be established in areas most affected. Yet year-after-year, the ANC government ignores the peoples call as drug abuse and drug related crime skyrockets. The fact that there has been a 325% increase in drug and gang-related crime since the Narcotics Bureau was disbanded in 2004 highlights the desperate need for specialised units to ensure that those who sell drugs to our young people are put behind bars.
Government is simply not doing enough to solve this and change is needed to give the millions of young people hope and reason to keep striving for a better future. The DA Leadership will be handing over a memorandum to the police, detailing our call for an end to drug abuse and crime amongst our youth.
The Leader will be joined by DA Shadow Minister of Police, Zakhele Mbhele, DA Youth Leader, Yusuf Cassim, DA KZN Provincial Leader, Zwakele Mncwango, and DA KZN Provincial Chairperson, Haniff Hoosen.
The march will be as follows:
- Date: Friday, 16 June 2017
- Time: 09:45
- Starting point: Chartford Sports Ground, Corner of Chartford Drive and Avonford Crescent, Phoenix
- End Point: Phoenix Police Station, Corner of Phoenix Highway and Longcroft Drive, Phoenix
