Your Prepaid Meter Will Have to be ‘Upgraded’ Soon

25 June 2023 by My Durban
  • How to upgrade your prepaid meter
  • What is TID and why is it relevant to your meter
  • If you fail to upgrade by November 2024 your prepaid meter will stop accepting new tokens

The TID process that all prepaid meters go through needs to be updated on each individual meter by November 2024.

The TID Rollover project is being driven by the Standard Transfer Specification Association of South Africa (STS).

A TID is a unique token identifier coded into any token that you purchase from any vendor point or outlet when topping up your meter. The current identifier is calculated as the number of minutes that have elapsed since the base date of 1991. Consequently the incrementing of the 24 bit field contaning this value will eventually roll over to zero with the expected date of this occurence being November 2024 – similar problem to Y2K. New meters will now have a base date of 2014.

The TID process applies to all prepaid meters in South Africa.

The TIS process will be applied via a Key Change Tken (KCT) which is generated on the vending system and that token number will have to be enetered into each prepaid meter.

Straton Prepaid is currently conducting the TID Rollover process for all our pre-payment meters. Our competent teams will either visit the meter to enter the token; or the token will be sent to the consumer via the next purchase. This will be done in phases and we are working through the meters and sites.

In the case of the token being sent on the next vend, below is the process of entering the token. If your vend token does not accept please contact Straton Prepaid for assistance

The next vend token will show 3 sets of 20-digit tokens. Token 1 and 2 is the Key Change Token and the 3rd token is the vend token.

  1. Enter any unused tokens prior to doing the key change.
  2. Enter the 2 sets tokens in sequence and make sure they have been accepted.
  3. Lastly enter the vend token and if accepted the key change process was successful.

The process is a real threat and all prepaid meters (water, electricity and gas) will have to receive a new KCT by November 2024.

You will not lose any pre-purchased units on your meter and your meter will not have to be replaced.
