TO heighten awareness on hydrography and its critical role in maritime safety, environmental protection and sustainable economic development, eThekwini Municipality in partnership with the South African Navy and various maritime stakeholders, will host World Hydrography Day celebrations from today, 19 June to Sunday, 21 June.
World Hydrography Day, established by the International Hydrographic Organisation, is celebrated annually to raise awareness on the importance of hydrography in promoting safe navigation, marine environment protection, maritime security, and sustainable ocean development.
Hydrography is the science of measuring and describing the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers.

WORLD HYDROGRAPHY DAY LECTURE
A World Hydrography Day lecture will tackle contemporary hydrographic challenges, technological advancements, and opportunities within the maritime sector.
It will bring together maritime professionals, industry leaders, academics, and students.

OPEN SHIP PUBLIC VISITS AND SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY DISPLAYS AND DEFENCE INDUSTRY EXHIBITIONS
South African Navy vessels will be open for public visits. These visits will provide learners and the public with a unique opportunity to engage with naval personnel.
The South African Navy will host a series of static displays and defence industry exhibitions.

The World Hydrography Day celebrations will culminate in a Freedom of the City Parade through the streets of Durban.
The parade will showcase the enduring relationship between the South African Navy and the people of Durban while highlighting the Navy’s heritage, professionalism, and service to the nation.
