World Class Action Expected at Land Rover Durban High Goal Polocrosse Event:
The stage is set for the second Land Rover Durban High Goal polocrosse event, which will be hosted at the Durban Shongweni Club between the 23rd and 25th of June, where South Africa’s top players will be showcasing their talents over three consecutive days. The action-packed equestrian event promises to deliver some spectacular skills and prowess from some of the country’s highest ranked players.
“This fast-paced, high intensity sport is quickly gaining momentum, especially amongst spectators. The high goal is the highlight of the polocrosse season, with players of international caliber competing at KZN’s premiere equestrian club,” said chairman of the Shongweni Polocrosse Club, Brent Von Benecke.
Similar to last year’s inaugural competition, there will be eight teams – four men’s and four ladies – competing for the top spot in the High Goal competition. Each team consists of six highly ranked players.
In polocrosse, each player is given a handicap, indicating his or her level of skills, ranging from 0 (beginner) to 10 (highest ranking). In a high goal competition, the team’s total combined handicap must average between 42 and 45 for mens teams and 26-28 for the ladies teams.
Land Rover, the event’s main sponsor, will also be sponsoring a team in each of the men’s and ladies categories. “This is the premier event on the Polocrosse calendar, assuring the spectators a weekend of competitive, high intensity action,” said Andre Schrenk, dealer principal of Jaguar Land Rover Durban.
“This sport is an ideal fit for our brand, as Land Rover owners are people with a sense of adventure. They associate with quality of life, the great outdoors, sport and competition. Polocrosse offers all of this,” added Schrenk.
Schrenk emphasised that the inaugural High Goal last year exceeded all their expectations. Teams of world class quality pitted their skills against each other in every match and there was non-stop action and intense excitement.
“We as title sponsors are looking forward to a great event with increased spectator attendance and more world-class competition and skills on show,” he said.
This year’s event has a surprise element of wildcard players in both the men’s and ladies competitions.
Shongweni Polocrosse Committee member Sam Heynes said, “We have this year decided to include lady wildcards which we hadn’t included last year. Also this year’s wildcards in both the ladies and men’s divisions are all of the top players in the country so this creates much excitement about teams and who shall be bought by each team, thus giving us a totally unknown outcome on the winners.”
According to Heynes, wildcard players will be auctioned off to the highest bidding teams at a gala dinner on 22 June.
“We are so looking forward to this year’s High Goal. We have some Australian players flying in again this year which brings much hype and excitement to the event,” said Sam Heynes, on behalf of the Shongweni Polocrosse Committee. Heynes expressed the committee’s gratitude to Land Rover for being an integral part of their polocrosse club and the High Goal, and said that they looked forward to a bigger and better event this year.
The Land Rover High Goal will see world-class polocrosse action daily between 8.00am and 4.30pm with six games per day. Each game is divided into six-minute chukkas alternating between the men’s and women’s teams. The format ensures a fast-paced, action-packed game, providing great entertainment for the whole family.
This event will be a perfect family outing, with vendors on the outskirts, jumping castles and kids’ entertainment, as well as festivities in the evening after the day’s matches.
