Varsity College put up a vastly improved performance when they ran rampant against Standard Bank Richards Bay beating the Zululand side 68-6. Scoring 11 tries on their victory march in their Fidelity Security Premier Division at their home grounds in Durban North last Saturday they certainly look as though they have now found their rhythm rounding off one of their better performances of the season.
It was sweet revenge for the students as they were surprisingly beaten by the hard men from The Bay in their in their First Round encounter up in Zululand leaving a few eyebrows raised at the time. However they have improved dramatically since then and look as though they will be lot more competitive for the remainder of the season.
Duran Krummereck led the charge with three tries with Zwela Zondi weighing in with another two and the rest going to Blake Mingay, Willem Rheeder, Malcolm Cele, Coneree Poole, Rikus Zwart to go with a penalty try. Skipper Josh Fourie converted eight of the 11 tries rounding off another solid and improved performance at the base of the scrum.
In the games played last Friday evening College Rovers and SA Home Loans Durban Collegians remained on track for the big finale with Rovers accounting for Bidvest Insurance 70-15 and Collegians picking up a solid away win beating their hosts eThekeini Refractories Amanzimtoti 35-25 with the South Coast Terriers picking up a valuable four try bonus point.
Rovers were imperious in their runaway victory over what looked like a sadly depleted Durban North outfit. Grant Rattray playing on the wing on this occasion, hooker Chris Kemp and Grant Williams led the try scoring spree with two each with fullback Mark Richards flank Graham Geldenhuys and Warren Randall, who came off the bench, crossing for the balance.
Crusaders replied with tries from centre Nkululeko Marawana, wing Zweli Silaule and No 8 Curtley Johnson
In the Premier Division Bottom Five FNB UKZN IMPI hammered Newcastle 59-15 and South Coast Warriors beat Mancosa Zululand Rhinos 43-19.
In the First Division Westville beat the Ballito Dolphins 27-19 while Maritzburg Collegians and Durban Mets drew 29-29.
With the Vodacom July taking place on Saturday Rovers will host Varsity College tomorrow evening (Thursday), which also accommodates the students as they leave for their annual tertiary rugby festival this weekend. Collegians travel to Richards Bay and Toti entertain Crusaders.
Jaguar Land Rover Durban Hillcrest who had a bye should be given huge accolades and well supported for their big fund raiser that they are putting together. Rugby4Jaxon at Kearsney College on 8th July is going to fun afternoon of true rugby camaraderie for a great cause. Jaxon Bartman has a life threatening kidney disorder and The Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club have put a special day together for the young lad which will see the Old School Villagers Team up against The Hillcrest Villagers RFC at the spectacular setting in Bothas Hill.
Tonight (Wednesday) sees Rovers hosting log leaders in the Under 20 ‘A’ Division for the Frank Norris Cup. Rovers who have been something of a revelation this season have a golden opportunity to reclaim the trophy named after one of the KZNRU’s great administrators who was one of their past players and Chairman, which they last won in 2009. After beating Collegians 29-19 last Friday evening with 11 of their players called away to do duty for the junior provincial side they have shown a wonderful fighting spirit. However Varsity College remain the only unbeaten side after their 73-3 win over UKZN so with a mere three points separating the two sides its all to play for.
