Wednesday Club Rugby Column – Featured Durban Blog

18 July 2018 by My Durban

Wednesday Club Rugby Column:

It wasn’t pretty and it was most definitely not at all entertaining, but it was most certainly an enthralling and nail bighting affair that saw College Rovers maintain their unbeaten record in the Fidelity ADT Premier Division league when they edged out SA Home Loans Durban Collegians 8-0 on KP 3 the home of Rovers last Saturday.

Leading 5-0 at the break after a superb try by Rovers fullback Gav Scott set up by a brilliantly executed cross kick by lock Mike Hutton, it remained anyone’s game. With both sides defending their respective lines madly it was Rovers that prevailed in the end with Scott adding a penalty towards the end. The game was spoilt a little being played with uncontested scrums throughout the second half it and in the end it was Rovers who had to do most of the defending and defend they did with blood and guts well into the ninth minute of extra time

The two remaining games were postponed because of the inaugural KZNRU 10’s, which was won by the SA Rugby Legends in a curtain raiser to the Super Rugby game between the Sharks and Jaguares which saw the Sharks find their way to the playoffs after beating the Argentinians 20-10. Next stop for them Christchurch in New Zealand to face the Crusaders, which undoubtedly is a huge ask. Having said that the Sharks have done well away from home in New Zealand and we wish them all the best.

With that, the final curtain comes down on the Premier Division league and sees the last two games being played this Saturday. Bidvest Insurance Crusaders will host FNB UKZN Maritzburg at their headquarters in Ranleigh Crescent Durban North while their neighbours Varsity College entertain Richards Bay at Riverside.

In the First Division there is yet another two rounds still to be completed after Westville beat Maritzburg Collegians 55-0 and Ballito Dolphins beat Durban Mets beat 31-26 Jaguars game against Mancosa Zululand Rhinos was postponed as was the game between Land Rover Durban Hillcrest and UKZN Durban.

This Saturday sees South Coast Warriors at home to Zululand Rhinos and UKZN Durban entertaining Jaguars while tonight (Wednesday) Durban Mets face UKZN Durban on their home grounds. So as their league season draws to a close its all to play for with Hillcrest and South Coast Warriors heading into the main straight and the Villagers one point to the good on the log table.
