Truck driver and 83 year-old killed in horror smash

8 September 2015 by Alan

Durban – Two men have been killed in a horror crash involving a heavy-goods truck and a car at the junction of the N2 and Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Sarnia on Tuesday.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that judging by the damage to both vehicles, the heavy-goods truck had ploughed into the side of the car before veering away and hitting a bridge stanchion.

Paramedic found the wreckage of the car underneath the bridge and the truck was resting against a pillar.

“The truck’s cab had been completely crushed and medics were unable to gain access to the driver who succumbed to his injuries,” he said.

“The driver of the car, an 83-year-old man, was in a critical condition and had sustained severe traumatic injuries. Paramedics began treating him, but he went into cardiac arrest.”

Jamieson said a team of medics performed CPR on the ailing man, but he died at the scene of the accident.

“The road was closed while medics were working on the patient and now rescue technicians will use hydraulic equipment to cut through the wreckage of the truck to free the body of the driver,” he said.
