David Tlale heats up the City of Durban with a Fashion Extravaganza
Johannesburg, South Africa (22 February 2013) — Headlined by South Africa’s design sensation David Tlale, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism presented a one-of-a-kind Fashion Extravaganza on 22 February at the Durban Botanic Gardens.
With the primary objective to showcase, develop and nurture KwaZulu-Natal’s budding talent, the Fashion Extravaganza also featured Durban-based designers such as Life by André Martin, Lindiwe Khuzwayo and Zarth by Zama Mathe.
Following the fashion showcase, a two-day fashion seminar was be held, where David Tlale will workshop KZN’s graduate designers from various design schools.
“When I was a young designer, we rarely had opportunities like these where we had real life designers giving us real life experiences. There’s a profound difference between the theoretical experience and real life experience, and I feel that this would give young designers an enriching experience,” says David Tlale.
At this seminar, the students were taken through the journey of a designer, the demands and realities of the fashion world: the business of fashion, choosing the right fabric to tell your story, the importance of pattern-making, amongst other things.
Most promising designers to emerge out of this two-day seminar were given an opportunity to do a full one-year internship with David Tlale in Johannesburg, beginning on 01 March 2013.
“This way they get to have a hands-on experience, see us work as we build a collection from scratch, get to work behind the scenes at a fashion week and catch a glimpse of the fashion week mania, as well as seeing the day-to-day running of a fashion business,” adds Tlale.
