The Grinder Challenge

8 May 2014 by Alan

It is of paramount importance for fire-fighters to always maintain physical and mental strength required to carry out their daily duties of saving lives, preserving property and treading where others fear to go.

To test their readiness, the Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services Unit will host the Grinder Challenge, a competition for all fire services personnel aimed at not only testing the physical strength of the individuals, but also build team-spirit and boost morale. The competition, started in 2012, is also used as a selection platform for the team that represents the Municipality at the National Toughest Fire-fighter Alive Challenge, which is hosted annually in Cape Town. The Challenge is a great way to give these exceptional men and women a sense of acknowledgement, accomplishment and ultimately motivate them to keep going strong in their duties.

Exciting challenges that spectators will be treated to include; Hose Drag, where participants are expected to pick up branches to extend the lines of hose to 80-90m; Tower, where fire-fighters will race up a tower while carrying a 25kg foam drum. Other activities are the simulated victim drag and running up a 23 storey stair. There are various prizes to be won for the different challenges. These include trophies, medals, holiday vouchers, safety sunglasses and different hampers.

The Municipality is encouraging residents to come out and support the event.

Details of the challenge are as follows:

  • Date: Friday, 09 and Saturday, 10 May 2014
  • Venue: North Beach Amphitheatre
  • Time: 09H00-16H00
Category: GovernmentTag: Emergency Service Unit, Firefighter
