In response to the recent wall collapse at the Nazareth Baptist Church in eBuhleni Village, eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba has deployed a dedicated technical team to provide professional oversight and support for all construction projects undertaken on the church premises.
The intervention follows the collapse of a wall earlier this week that left eight people injured.
Mayor Xaba visited the church last night accompanied by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Zandile Myeni, councillors, and the Municipality’s senior management, to introduce the multidisciplinary team, which will work closely with church leadership to strengthen compliance with building and safety standards.
The church welcomed the Municipality’s intervention and committed to working closely with the City to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in future.
The technical team will provide support on construction, engineering, building inspections, emergency services, and other technical matters to ensure that all projects comply with applicable safety and building regulations.
Speaking during the visit, Mayor Xaba expressed relief that no lives were lost.
“While we are saddened by this unfortunate incident, we are grateful that no lives were lost. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the injured and their families,” he said.
Mayor Xaba said the Municipality’s visit demonstrated its solidarity with the Nazareth Baptist Church and reaffirmed the City’s commitment to supporting the congregation while strengthening safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
He emphasised the importance of complying with approved building regulations and engineering standards for all construction projects.
“The technical team will provide the necessary guidance and oversight because we want to ensure full compliance with engineering, building and safety requirements,” said Mayor Xaba.
The Mayor also commended the Municipality’s emergency services personnel for their swift response, which ensured that those injured were rescued promptly and received urgent medical attention.
