Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police have hailed “Operation Fiyela” as a resounding success after the seizure of more than 75 illegal firearms in Greytown over the past two months.
The broadly bannered operation is ongoing, with police top brass warning of more arrests still to come.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said officers had worked tirelessly to raid homes in Muden, Msinga and Kranskop, during which time 35 people were arrested.
“We have embarked on multidisciplinary operations under the banner of Operation Fiyela. Operations have been launched across the province with hundreds of arrests for various offences taking place,” he said.
“These multi-disciplinary operations include various Saps disciplines, the SANDF, department of home affairs officials and Metro Police aim to clean up our streets of criminal elements and make our neighbourhoods safer.”
“In the days ahead, Operation Fiyela will be going into other areas as our intelligence dictates and we will be cleaning up identified trouble areas.
“Members of our provincial joints structures are fully involved in all operations and we enjoy the support of all government departments that form part of this body. There will be a lot of dust as we hit the ground and we want to assure our communities that criminals will be feeling the heat,” Zwane said.
‘Hard work’
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal too commended the police for their “continued hard work”.
Provincial secretary Sihle Zikhalala said that they were pleased that rogue elements of society were now in the line of fire.
“We are pleased with the level of commitment and enthusiasm with which the security cluster is working in rooting out rogue elements in communities under the banner of Operation Fiyela which has seen hundreds of people being arrested in various parts of the province.”
“The confiscation of illegal firearms in Msinga, Muden, Kranskop and other nearby areas as well as the arrest of 35 suspects is indeed encouraging and needs to be applauded.
“The ANC will continue to support all the government initiatives that seek to make sure that communities are protected and safe at all times. We also encourage communities to continue working closely with the police and make sure that all criminal activities are reported,” he said.
