Strengthening Durban Beachfront Safety

11 May 2026 by My Durban

The Tourism Business Council of South Africa, in partnership with eThekwini Municipality and various tourism sector stakeholders, will tomorrow, 12 May, launch the eThekwini Coastal Tourism Policing Initiative.

The initiative aims to strengthen tourism safety and enhance visitor confidence along Durban’s beachfront and key tourism nodes.

The initiative is being implemented through strategic support provided by the Presidential eThekwini Working Group.

The launch will take place during Africa’s Travel Indaba, one of the continent’s leading tourism trade events, underscoring the critical role that safety plays in growing South Africa’s tourism economy and enhancing destination competitiveness.

With thousands of tourism delegates, buyers, and media representatives from across the globe gathered in Durban for Africa’s Travel Indaba, the initiative reflects growing collaboration between the public and private sector to ensure tourism destinations remain safe, welcoming, and investment-ready.

Supported through the Tourism Marketing South Africa Collaborative Fund, the initiative includes the handover of tourism safety assets to support visible policing and rapid-response operations in high-tourism areas.

Details are as follows:

  • Date: Tuesday, 12 May 2026
  • Time: 15:00
  • Venue: Beach Café, Durban Beachfront
  • RSVP: media@tbcsa.travel and gugu.mdlalose@durban.gov.za.

Programme Highlights

  • Keynote address by the Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille
  • Official handover of tourism safety assets to eThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, demonstrating a strong public-private partnership
  • Showcase of collaborative efforts between tourism stakeholders and law enforcement agencies

Transport will be available for members of the media covering Africa’s Travel Indaba, departing from the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre to the venue.
