Statement from the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union:
This past weekend a U/18 rugby development high performance camp was held in Durban in preparation for a schools tournament commencing in Gauteng this Friday.
Development players from across the five KZN sub-unions were present at this camp, which concluded at midday on Sunday.
On the way back home players from the Northern Natal sub-union convinced their driver to stop at the beach before going home. One of the players did not report back to the awaiting transportation.
KZNRU officials were informed and a search ensued. At approximately 13h30 on Monday, the KZNRU received news that the body of a young man was found by members of Durban Sea Rescue.
The missing player’s family is in the process of identifying the body. Out of respect for his family and the relevant processes, no further information can be given at this stage.
The KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union will continue to provide support to the family, where possible, during this difficult time.
