February 25, 2022: The St George’s Park cricket ground and ground crew have come out as undisputed champions of the CSA T20 Challenge following a month of near non-stop cricket.
Sunday’s final will be played on an even pitch and good outfield despite nearly seven thousand balls and thousands of runs since the first game on February 7, according to head groundsman Adrian Carter.
This will make for exciting cricket on the last day of the series, which has been successfully played in a bio bubble.
The final will be played on Sunday, February 27 from 13:00, and is open to a limited number of spectators.
Tickets are available online through Ticketpro and at the stadium.
Seats for the action-filled afternoon of cricket are limited due to Covid-19 protocols.
Carter is also confident that the test pitch and field will be ready for the second test match between Bangladesh and South Africa which will be played at St George’s from April 8.
“There are also four 50 over Warriors Game to be hosted before then, but we will really knuckle down over the next five weeks to make sure everything is ready for the test match,” he says.
The weather helped during the CSA T20 as there was some “fairly decent” overnight rain and the temperatures were not as hot as feared.
Days were warm, with the teams drinking 18 240 units of water, soft drinks and energy drinks, according to stadium management.
Nelson Mandela Bay suppliers also stepped up to the wicket. Around 3 172 player and match official meals were served during the competition.
“We are very happy with the way the facilities have played. There were no surprises. The practice facilities have taken a pounding, but that was expected,” he says.
Five pitches were used on main field, with the centre test pitch being rested after the first game.
“Obviously, it still took a bit of strain during play, but we will be able to get it back into peak condition if the weather plays along,” says Carter.
St George’s is the first stadium in South Africa to have hosted 31 T20 matches in a month.
