Creating unique flavour combinations, experimenting with different ingredients and most of all family fun, were the highlights at the Secret Tribe Chief Cook competition recently held in Durban. The event brings families together through fun in the kitchen and was part of a competition for Spur’s Secret Tribe members – an exclusive club for kids aged 12 years and younger.

15 family teams from across Durban came together to create culinary delights and compete for the ‘Best Nachos’ and ‘Best Burger’ title and prizes. The teams were made up of a variety of combinations; mom-and-son, father-and-daughter, sisters and cousins, who went all out to win the top prizes in each category.

Each team was given the exciting challenge of creating authentic cheesy nachos, as well as making mouth-watering Spur burgers. To add a unique twist to their creations, they were also given the opportunity to include their favourite Spur Sauce as an ingredient.

Hosted at the Berea-based Gecko Culinary Adventures, the event kicked off with teams creating their nachos plates. Each team was judged on their ability to work together, as well as the taste of their nachos, what toppings they used and how well the flavours worked together. Sister team, Simoene Reddy (22) and Rea (10) and Mom-and-daughter team Lo’real Watson and Learah (7) walked away with the top honours in the nachos category.

The ‘Best Burger’ challenge was fierce and focused on teamwork, how well the patty was cooked and mostly importantly how it tasted. The ‘Best Burger’ prize went to Jackie Burn and her son, Bevan (12), who apart from cooking the patty to perfection used a delicious combination of sauces and toppings to make their burger stand out from the rest. Clive Moonsamy and his son, Evan (10) came a close second.

“It was really difficult to choose the winners. All the teams worked so well together, reminding us how important it is for families to spend time together, cook together and eat together”, says Joe Stead, Creative Director from Spur Steak Ranches. “Thank you also to DStv, Rascals and Spur Retail Sauces who partnered with us to bring families together in the kitchen”.
