Spinners bowl Dolphins to emphatic win – Featured Durban Blog

Spinners bowl Dolphins to emphatic win:

Durban – A clinical display by Keshav Maharaj and Prenelan Subrayen with the ball saw the Hollywoodbets Dolphins to a nine wicket win over the Imperial Lions in their 4-Day Domestic Series clash at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Thursday.

The Lions began the final day on 73 for three, trailing the Dolphins by 125 runs but the spinning pair of Maharaj and Subrayen did all the hard leg work which helped spin them to victory on a spinner friendly pitch.

Maharaj picked up the first three wickets of the Lions innings wickets on Wednesday afternoon and continued in the same vein on Thursday with three more wickets.

Subrayen bagged three important wickets on the final morning seeing off overnight batsmen Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton before he claimed the wicket of Dwaine Pretorius.

After his effort with the ball Maharaj believed that it was a strong team effort that allowed him the freedom with the ball in the Lions second innings.

“It’s really nice to be back in a competitive environment and the boys did really well,” Maharaj said.

“We did the basics well and Ortneill (Baartman) set the tone and then KP (Keegan Petersen) and SJ (Erwee) played exceptionally well and that is what we have wanted from the side for a long time.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season and we are hoping to carry that form into the rest of the campaign.”

Coach Imraan Khan was happy with the way the side performed over the four days despite a tough start in the first session of day one.

“We struggled in the first session of the game probably due to the slowness of the surface but after that the execution was fantastic,” Khan said.

“We had a little chat at tea on day one and I think the boys executed brilliantly after that for the rest of the four days.”

The Dolphins will now travel to Bloemfontein to face the VKB Knights in their second round clash at the Mangaung Oval next week.

Dolphins tighten their grip against the Lions:

Durban – The Hollywoodbets Dolphins tightened their stranglehold on their opening 4-Day Domestic Series clash with the defending champions the Imperial Lions on day three with an empathic, record-breaking batting display and a bold declaration.

The Dolphins returned to the crease at the start of the third day on 189/1, and eventually declared their first innings just before tea on a mammoth 458, a lead of exactly 200 runs.

The lion’s share of that came from the record-breaking 344 run second wicket partnership between SJ Erwee and Keegan Petersen, the highest first class partnership of all time at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead.

Erwee bagged his biggest score in Dolphins colours and nearly a second first class double a heart-breaking 199 before he hit a Dwaine Pretorius delivery to Temba Bavuma at short cover, while Petersen was composed and full value for his 173.

Petersen felt that the side did well and although they are in a good position it’s going to take some good bowling to win.

“It’s going to be a good challenge for us,” Petersen said. “Our spinners are in the game all the time but you have to bear in mind they have some good batters, a couple of Proteas, to come so it’s going to be a helluva task for us.

“It will be great to start the season with a win because it will put us on the front foot so we want to get out of this game with a bit of confidence.”

Skipper Marques Ackerman helped upped the urgency as they sought to extend their lead, and with the pitch starting show inconsistency and some turn, it was a brave declaration that spoke to the Dolphins desire to chase the full points for the victory in the time remaining in the match.

The visitors showed little urgency as they came under pressure from paceman Otneil Baartman and the spin trio of Keshav Maharaj, Prenelan Subrayen and Senuren Muthusamy.

Dom Hendricks fell for 12, then Rassie van der Dussen was stumped charging Maharaj, leaving the Lions teetering at 51/2. Dangerman Reeza Hendricks was Maharaj’s third victim as he went back to a ball that stayed low and was trapped LBW.

At the close the Lions were 75/3, trailing by 125 runs going into the final day.
