The Spiritual Vodka Shisanyama Festival Sets the Stage for Heritage Month
Africa’s Oktober Fest in uMlazi
South Africa’s biggest, badest, and madest shisanyama festival hits Durban shores once again. On Saturday September 2, from 12noon until late, Eyadini Lounge in uMlazi will be the hottest spot in Durban as it plays host to thousands of shisanyama fans ready to EAT, PARTY, REPEAT.
Dubbed Africa’s Oktober Fest, the Spiritual Vodka Shisanyama Festival presented by Durban Tourism and Ukhozi FM, is a celebration of the best of South African culture – good food and music. In a culmination of all things tasty, KZN’s best open-flame chefs will cook side-by-side to determine who makes the best shisanyama. Fans can expect spiced brisket, t-bone and chicken wings to go along with chakalaka, pap and ujeqe. All cooked by venues: Mashamplanes, Artizen Restaurant and Shisanyama, Comfort Zone Jazz Lounge, The Joint, Nsimbini Lifestyle, including an up-and-coming street vendor – Take It Easy Chicken Dust, and a township caterer Ningi’s Corner. And to wash it down – local beer and champagne.
“Our long-term goal is to be South Africa’s cultural must-see event. The Brazlians have their Rio Carnival, the Spanish have their tomato throwing festival, we have our Shisanyama Festival.” said Michelle Lewis, event organizer.
To help you digest the delicious dishes, you’ll be able to dance to some of the hottest names in music right now. The line up includes performances by Riky Rick, Big Nuz, Naves and Sphectacula, Unathi and many more.
“What’s shisanyama without great music. We’re looking forward to celebrating our culture,” said TJ Zama, owner of Eyadini Lounge and partner in the Festival.
This year’s festival layout is larger than life and promises an enormous VIP deck and tent, and a thousand seat communal dining experience at the heart of the event.
