In 2016, the Cell C Sharks joined forces with &Beyond at their Phinda Private Game reserve in Northern KZN to create a four part documentary TV series that was aired on SuperSport to highlight their key conversation and social upliftment projects in the region, as well as the Rhinos without Borders initiative, relocating rhinos to a safely guarded haven in Botswana.
Following on from the success of series one, The Cell C Sharks are proud to announce that another four-part series was commissioned and will be aired on Supersport during September 2017. September is Heritage month in South Africa and how fitting is it that we get to celebrate the preservation of our rich wildlife heritage during the airing of this series.
Each new 30-minute episode of the four part series will air at 20h30 on a Tuesday night during the month of September on Supersport 1, with the premiere airing tomorrow night, 5th September at 20h30.
Some of the highlights from this series includes following a research team involved in monitoring the hyena population on the reserve using specialised camera equipment placed in the bush; the players help replace a collar on a matriarch elephant; support wildlife vet Dr Mike Toft in the darting and capturing of the rare Suni antelope and Red Duiker for a breeding programme; witness an enthralling encounter with a lion up close as he is darted and given a medical procedure in the bush; take a night time visit to Sodwana Bay beach to see loggerhead turtles laying their eggs in the sand and help in the de-horning of some of the black and white rhino situated on the during reserve.
Cell C Sharks Flyhalf, Pat Lambie, who has a degree in Environmental Sciences, was one of a group of players involved in the shooting of the series.
“I love going to the bush, and to be able to experience it on a totally new level has been most rewarding”, he said. “To pull back the curtain and show the world the incredible work being done at Phinda, not just in protecting our rhino population, but in preserving all our fauna and flora for future generations, is also satisfying”, he said.
“The staff at Phinda are passionate about the work they do, and, even more so, about protecting these beautiful animals and the unique eco-system they live in, it’s an honour to share this with the public”, he said.
The Cell C Sharks also have some fun during their visits, including a paintball match against the rangers, a touch rugby match on the reserves’ runway, and a unique sleepout under the stars.
“It was one of the most thrilling and, at the same time, terrifying nights of my life”, said Tendai Mtawarira, Cell C Sharks prop.
“I was not looking forward to the experience but the Phinda staff went out their way to give us a truly authentic outdoor bush experience with their usual flair and style”, he said.
“The reserve manager did decide though that it shouldn’t be plain sailing for me, but you’ll have to watch the series to find out more”, he said.
The preservation of our country’s wildlife heritage is important and the Cell C Sharks are committed to doing whatever we can to highlight the wonderful work that is being done and to contribute in any way we can to making a difference.

Cell C Sharks head coach Robert du Preez was happy with his team’s 45-15 victory over the Free State Cheetahs at Growthpoint KINGS PARK on Saturday, but admitted that they had not had an easy time of it.
Free State came to Durban as log leaders, but missing their frontline players were always going to be up against a Cell C Sharks side riding the wave of success following five straight victories. However, it was always going to be a tricky fixture.
“It was a little bit tougher than what we expected, they really made us work hard for every single point and well done to them,” he said after the match.
The seven tries to two, bonus point victory took us to 29 log points, four ahead of our opponents Free State who have now slipped into second spot on the Currie Cup log.
Du Preez admitted that the positive from the game was that, despite the high scoreline, our team had to work hard for their tries, nothing was handed to us on a platter which was a good test.
“I’m very pleased with the boys, they’ve put in a lot of hard work, especially in the week leading up to this game. The guys ran a lot, there are a couple of things I’m not happy about, certainly the amount of turnovers we conceded and the number of opportunities that went begging, particularly in the opposition’s 22, but overall, as a fitness exercise, it was good.”
Despite the fact that Free State were missing an entire match squad because of their simultaneous Pro 14 commitments in Europe, the union still managed to put together a strong side.
“Free State were very good, they have a lot of Varsity Cup players there and they gave us a good run for our money.”
Tythan Adams is a new name in the Cell C Sharks set-up, the club rugby player attracting the attentions of our coaching staff.
“I was very pleased with Tythan, I was hoping we could give him more ball early on, I was pleased with his effort,” du Preez said.”
After beating Free State, it not only sent us to the top of the log, but also means we have now defeated all opposition in the competition which does place some pressure on the team in the forthcoming weeks leading into the knock-out rounds.
“We’ll have a target on our backs, we visit the Pumas this weekend which will be a tough encounter. I’m pleased with the result against Free State and we suffered no injuries.
“We have a difficult fortnight ahead of us, the Pumas ran the Lions close and Griquas could have beaten the Bulls, we have two very tough weeks ahead of us.”
