The EThekwini Municipality Electricity Unit has advised customers that in the early hours of Sunday, 9 February 2014, a fire at its Rossburgh Substation resulted in extensive damage to high voltage plant at this substation. The fire damage has resulted in power outages to the following areas:
- Bayhead
- Clairwood
- Parts of Rossburgh
- Businesses operating in the area will be affected
The Fire Department arrived at the scene immediately and extinguished the fire at approximately 07:00. Officials are presently on site to establish the extent of the damage and carry out reparation works to restore supply to the affected areas. The Municipality will use all available resources and work continuously to repair the damaged plant in order to restore supply. The Municipality will use alternative feeds from the medium voltage network to carry out partial restoration to some areas, but at this stage it is anticipated that total restoration may only be achieved sometime before the end of the week.
The Municipality’s electricity technical experts are investigating the cause of the fire and are unable to quantify the costs of the repair at this stage.
