Registration Open for Durban FilmMart 2024:

Next month the Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) will have the 15th edition of Durban FilmMart (DFM), titled ‘’African Visions Unleashed: From Disruption to Accountability’’, scheduled for 19 – 22 July 2024. This year the theme looks at the transformative power of film in reflecting societal issues and fighting for change, urging the industry towards better social responsibility and accountability.

This era has been marked by significant upheaval and re-evaluation of structures and norms, DFM 2024 is aiming to take a long hard look at the film industry, providing a platform for critical engagement on topical issues such as social responsibility, protection of IP, rights for artists and filmmakers, issues around labour, equality in the workplace, conduct codes, and the impact of climate change on productions. The focus will be on highlighting the potential of cinema as a tool for transformation.
‘’Film is more than an art form or a business; it is a powerful mirror for society, offering reflections that can lead to real change,’’ said Magdalene Reddy, Director of the Durban FilmMart Institute.

This year DFM will feature a wide-ranging programme designed to foster high-quality collaborations and provide valuable insights into the filmmaking process. Key components of the programme include fiction, documentary and animation projects being developed, showcased in the Pitch and Finance Forum. There will also be keynote talks, masterclasses, panel discussions and think tanks.
DFM 2024 aims to build on the legacy of last year’s theme, ‘’African Constellations’’, and continues to celebrate the expansiveness of the African film industry, while also pushing for a future where the film industry is as responsible as it is creative. The DFM programme will reflect DFMI’s core values of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility, with sessions aimed at addressing key industry challenges and opportunities.
DFM offers attendees the chance to be part of this conversation and to network with fellow professionals in a dynamic and engaging environment.

Quick Durban KwaZulu-Natal Fact: The Story of Huberta – Huberta was a hippopotamus and one of the most famous animals in South African history. In November 1928, Huberta left her waterhole in the St. Lucia Estuary, in Zululand and set off on the 1600km journey to the Eastern Cape, a journey which would take her three years. In that time Huberta became a minor celebrity in South Africa and attracted crowds wherever she went. She was initially thought to be a male and was nicknamed Hubert by the press. She stopped for a while at the mouth of the Mhlanga River in Natal and a failed attempt was made to capture her and put her in Johannesburg Zoo. After this, she headed south to Durban, where she visited a beach and a country club. Moving on to the Umgeni River, she became revered by Zulus and Xhosas alike. Finally she arrived in East London in March 1931. Despite her having been declared Royal Game (and thus protected) by the Natal Provincial Council, she was shot by hunters a month later. After a public outcry, the hunters were arrested and fined £25. Huberta’s body was recovered and sent to a taxidermist in London. Upon her return to South Africa in 1932, she was greeted by 20,000 people and can now be seen in the Amathole Museum, in King William’s Town.
