As we usher in tourism month, September, the City of Durban is preparing to start welcoming an influx of domestic tourists following the relaxation of lockdown regulations.
The Municipality, through ‘Rediscover Durban’ campaign has been encouraging tourists on virtual platforms to explore its hidden gems and is now calling on the sector and citizens to re-ignite Durban.
EThekwini Mayor, Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda stated: “We enter tourism month with boosted confidence. This follows the nomination of the eThekwini’s nine top business travel and tourism establishments for the prestigious annual World Travel Awards. We are more than ready to welcome back visitors now that the lockdown regulations have been relaxed.”
During the month of September, the City will be advocating for the public to know their city and its heritage, much of which is embedded in the tourism sector and infrastructure of the city. The campaign will take South Africa on a digital historical journey of the City and people will rediscover Durban through a social media and radio campaign that will profile the City’s milestones from its birth to present day.
“Tourism month is a crucial period from a domestic angle, and it serves as an opportunity to promote domestic tourism. We have exciting plans to re-ignite Durban and this month provides the industry with the opportunity for a magnified focus on the products that Durban has to offer in the tourism value chain,” said eThekwini Deputy City Manager for Economic Development and Planning, Philip Sithole.
World Tourism Day on 27 September will also see the city’s iconic buildings being lit up in a symbolic ceremony that will depict reigniting the tourism sector. Durban will send a message of hope to its residents, the nation and the rest of the world – living up to its promise as the warmest place to be.
