The Cell C Sharks Under 19s will host Western Province Under 19s at JONSSON KINGS PARK KP2 on Friday at 3pm in their SA Rugby Under 19 Championship week four clash.
Following on from their hard-fought 22-20 victory over the Blue Bulls U/19 in Pretoria last week, head coach Sean Everitt admitted that he was thrilled with not only the outcome of that match, but the way his charges went about earning the victory.
“Wins against the Bulls don’t come easy, but I’m happier about the way the guys performed; they showed a lot of guts and character in this victory,” Everitt said. “The Bulls are a good team that play at high intensity and their defence is coached by John Mitchell. But we still played good rugby against them.
“Going into this game we knew it would require a good defensive effort against a very good team playing at altitude and our defence was outstanding.
The guys worked hard during the week with regards to that facet of play and the character they displayed against the Bulls was admirable. I’m very, very proud of them as far as that’s concerned.”
Not only did defence step up to the plate, but attack too, said Everitt.
“Eight out of ten visits within striking distance earned us points, that’s 80% of the time which is a great success rate; they closed out opportunities when they had them which was very pleasing.”
A 100% unbeaten record after three matches has taken this junior Cell C Sharks side to the top of the log. This has come off the back of steadily improving performances week after week which was the team’s goal.
“For us it’s always been about improvement and for us, after this game, there has been a vast improvement, both as a team and in individual performances.
“In saying that, although we’ve won three out of three, we have a big game against Western Province on Friday before taking on the Cheetahs away and then the Lions at home.”
Western Province have good junior structures and Everitt admits that his team will have their work cut out for them.
“Province under 19s have always been well-coached teams, this year they have a good group of boys with a strong academy in Stellenbosch which produces good rugby players. In saying that, we also have a good team. I back our boys.”
He expects Province to come with something different to what they encountered against the Bulls last weekend.
“They’re more structured than the Bulls and perhaps a little more conservative in the way they play, but there will be opportunities for us and if we can improve our attack, I think we will get the result.”
