Metrorail says it in investigating the cause of the accident in which two trains collided in Berea, near the Durban city centre, on Tuesday evening.
It is believed that 80 people were injured in the accident and some were transported to a nearby hospital. Emergency services were on the scene to treat patients.
Earlier reports claimed that one of the trains may have had faulty signals, and this could have led to the collision.
Meanwhile, Metrorail train services on the Pretoria-Germiston-Johannesburg corridor have been affected this morning due to cable theft.
The incident is also affecting trains from Daveyton and Springs.
Germiston trains are being manually authorised, while crossing points between Isando and Elandsfontein are defective, resulting in train movement being authorised manually.
This is causing further delays to trains running between Germiston and Johannesburg. The anticipated delays on this corridor are about 30 minutes.
“The technical team is working around the clock to repair the stolen cables at Germiston/Delmore and broken rails at Kaalfonteon/Olifantsfontein,” said Metrorail.
