Private Security Guards Arrested In Phoenix For Drug And Firearm Possession

The Durban Metro Police Service have arrested two private security personnel and one suspect for drug and firearm possession in Phoenix on Groven End Drive.

The intelligence-driven operation was conducted following intense investigation by the Metro’s Drug team, Business Forum Task Team and Metro Police EITT (SOD1) and working with various other law enforcement institutions.

Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, confirmed the arrests and applauded law enforcement’s joint quest of infiltrating the drug syndicates throughout the City.

“Three suspects were arrested during the operation in Phoenix. These include two private security guards and one other suspect. Criminal charges include unlawful possession of 78 pieces of crack cocaine with an estimated street value of approximately R3 900,” said Zungu.

The two security guards were apprehended and charged for failure to safeguard a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Officers seized a Norinco rifle, magazine, 30 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, and a rifle bag.

Estimated value of seized exhibits is approximately R50 000.

The other guard was arrested for failing to safeguard a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

These joint operations will continue to be rolled out throughout the City and communities, with a sole purpose of ensuring a drug-free society, which illegal narcotics negatively contribute to criminality, poverty and homelessness.
