Durban – Locals and foreign nationals gathered at the Isipingo Beach Sports ground on Wednesday to offer their daily Islamic afternoon prayer, with an added call for peace.
Led by Moulana Ismail Carrim, the men gathered for 15 minutes on prayer mats just after 13:00.
One of the supplicants said the congregation included men from Ethiopia and Somalia.
Abed Karrim from the Al-Imdaad Foundation said the prayer gathering showed that life had to go on.
“The Muslim community prays five times a day. It’s encouraging to see the Muslim clergy having the daily prayers and giving… advice to turn to God during this difficult time,” said Karrim.
He said the humanitarian foundation based in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, had been helping with blankets, mattresses, hygiene packs and food for the past two weeks.
There were over 300 displaced foreign nationals sharing three tents at the Isipingo camp.
At least five people, including a 14-year-old boy, have died, and 74 people have been arrested during several days of looting and violence against foreign nationals.
